Virtual Pool 2
The Ultimate Pool Simulation
Virtual Pool 2 represents another breakthrough in real-time 3D sport
simulations. The goal of the Virtual Pool product line is make pool the most
realistic and playable sport simulation available. To meet that goal, Celeris
software engineers have invested over 8000 programming hours in upgrading both
the physics simulation and the graphics system. The result is an overall gain in
the simulation’s realism that gives players a totally new level of immersion.
All aspects of Virtual Pool have been upgraded for Vers. 2, however the most
impressive upgrade visually is the shaded balls.
Thanks to a proprietary ray-tracing technology, Virtual Pool 2 players can
enjoy the fastest pool simulation able to render 3D real-time photo realistic
balls. Rendering on the balls also includes shadows and highlights. These allow
players to aim using the same visual clues and characteristics they would
experience on a real pool table. Support for 3D hardware acceleration ensures
fast frame rates and smooth performance in excess of 50 frames per second.
Without 3D acceleration performance will still average 30 frames per second on a
typical Pentium 166.
Jump Balls and More
To compliment the new graphics Celeris also developed a more accurate and
extensive physics model. One of the most notable features players will discover
within the new physics model is the ability to jump balls- either intentionally
or by miscuing. Development for the interaction between the cue tip and the cue
ball was also extended to model the other variations possible when a miscue
occurs. Another upgrade followed for ball collision and rail collision. For
players that favor different table characteristics, options were added so table
speed, rail bounce and pocket geometry can be adjusted. Finally, modeling for
the interference between ball, rail, and cue stick was developed. Now rails and
balls can interfere with shot execution just as they do on a real table. In
summary, Virtual Pool 2 has been upgraded to a much higher fidelity simulation
than Version 1.
Smarter Computer Opponents
Important aspects of game play have also been enhanced for Virtual Pool 2. New
pool rooms and pool tables with texture mapping were developed. To make sure
there’s no shortage of action in the rooms, the number of computer opponents
has been increased from nine to sixty four. The artificial intelligence for the
computer opponents also underwent extensive upgrading so they play and compete
with much more human-like characteristics.
Organize Your Own Tournament and Wagers
Extensive new features were added to Virtual Pool 2 for players that enjoy
organized competition. Tournaments can be arranged with the computer opponents
and played in rounds based upon the player’s skill. Statistics are kept for
player ratings based on play against opponents. Options for specific stats for
each game are also possible.
More Interface Options
Player control in Virtual Pool 2 has been upgraded for more flexibility and
definition. New features include user interface controls and user selectable
camera views. Improvements for easier implementation of game rules were also
added. Players can easily observe rules such as call shots for 8 Ball and
Straight Pool. Plus, calling safeties for Straight Pool and 8-Ball, and even
push outs for 9-Ball have been included.
World Champion Mike Sigel Gives Lessons
Rounding out Virtual Pool 2’s upgrade is new live motion video featuring world
champion Mike Sigel. Sigel’s winning techniques will help players polish their
skills, and new practice exercises were developed to speed up learning. Players
will be able to jump from Mike Sigel’s lessons to their related practice
setups.
